I don't think they paid $1 Million for the domain itsself. Notice the wording in two articles about it.

"The partners paid $1 million negotiating the purchase of that domain name"

and "Their faith in the concept was so strong that they spent a full year and $1 million negotiating the purchase of the FinancialAid.com domain name. They paid six figures to simply remove the "e" from "aide."

So all we know it is was more than $100,000 and less and $1 Million. I guess the rest of the money went to their lawyers or other employees.
